Experience Ribnitz-Damgarten – The Gateway to Fischland-Darß-Zingst

Ribnitz-Damgarten is an extremely charming destination located right where the Recknitz River flows into the Ribnitzer See – a large and scenic coastal lagoon. The town is known as the gateway to the impressive Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula and combines maritime cosiness, unspoilt nature and strong historical traditions in one overall destination.

History and cultural background of Ribnitz-Damgarten

For centuries, the Recknitz River served as a significant border between two different regions. Ribnitz, which was first mentioned in 1233, belonged to the Duchy of Mecklenburg, while Damgarten was part of Pomerania from 1258. The two districts developed separately over several hundred years, with one side characterized by Mecklenburgian culture and the other by Pomeranian and later Swedish influence. It was not until 1950 that they were officially merged into one city.

Today, Ribnitz-Damgarten is particularly known as the “Bernsteinstadt” – the Amber City. Large finds of amber made the area the center of German amber art and amber processing in the 20th century, and amber still plays an important role in the city’s identity.

Atmospheric holiday town with authentic coastal charm

When you move through Ribnitz-Damgarten, the city is experienced as a peaceful coastal adventure filled with historical atmosphere. The old center offers classic North German brick Gothic, well-preserved half-timbered houses and cozy harbor areas with sailboats and cafes along the water.

The destination has become particularly popular with travelers who want a more peaceful and authentic holiday experience away from mass tourism. Many choose modern holiday apartments with views of the marina or luxurious thatched villas close to the lagoon. Accommodation options focus mainly on self-catering, allowing visitors to experience the area as locals do.
